We are not a clinical psychologist or an expert MD. We haven’t spent years studying the human mind or buddhism, hinduism and Sanskrit. While we have a little knowledge in all of these areas, the real value comes from personal experience.
Many years ago while at a company event I was asked, “what do you like to do?” That one simple question threw me for a complete loop. I wasn’t sure how to answer. I babbled a few things about baking and yoga but felt completely inferior in my response. So silly right? Who doesn’t know what they like to do? I didn’t. I wasn’t sure of my direction or where I wanted to go. I knew I wasn’t happy in my current career but had no clue what direction I wanted to take or how to decide. I was just going through the motions. I was anxious, unhappy and as an introvert who didn’t share any of this with anyone, I felt very alone and embarrassed. To me I assumed everyone knew who they were and where they wanted their future to go. Never assume.
Fast forward several years. Along the way I had done a lot of yoga and dabbled in meditation but it was what I call surface work only. I wasn’t allowing myself to get deeper and understand myself better. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up (I was already grown up) and didn’t feel any closer to getting there. How discouraging. So where am I going with this? What brought me to where I am now? (Still on my journey but in a much happier and content place). It all started with a 30 day yoga challenge. I did yoga for 30 days straight, then another 30, then another 30 and so on. I did yoga every day for 10 months. I got to a point where I wasn’t watching videos anymore and was guiding my own practice. This turned in to a moving meditation. I started journaling, writing any silly ideas or thoughts I had down (realizing what occupies my mind and gets me excited), I started a daily meditation practice, I took all the personality tests to learn more about myself then took a deeper look by addressing my Chakra’s and working on more specific areas of what makes me who I am. This is the short story version but this is it. I’ve had several “aha!” moments along the way and while I continue to learn and grow, I am more at peace and aware of who I am than I have ever been before.
My hope and goal is that from my experience I can help lead you to discover who you are and what makes you happy deep down. Everything provided here is to help support you through your journey. There is no one size fits all to this process so please pick and choose and try different aspects of all of it. If you’re drawn to one thing more than the other start there. At different points along the way you may find you want to write more then mediate or read more then do yoga. Listen to your own queues and allow yourself to guide you along the journey. There are great moments and there are some that are tough. I invite you to sit with whatever feelings come up and work through them. Ask yourself questions about these feelings and seek answers. It is an adventure. A journey. A journey that’s changed my life for the better and that I hope can do the same for you. Thank you for being here and enjoy the ride.
